In Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™— the first expansion to Guild Wars® 2—ArenaNet is
introducing the Mastery system, an innovative approach to endgame progression in an MMO. Masteries are a new way for Guild Wars 2 players to grow their characters once they reach level 80. The system does away with the traditional gear and level grind of traditional progression, which can invalidate previous progress with skills and abilities that players have earned, and widen the gap between new and veteran players.
Here are some of the main elements of the Mastery system coming with Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns:
Endgame Progression Directly Tied to Gameplay, Story, and Future Updates
The Mastery system allows players to overcome challenges to earn context-specific skills and abilities. What they earn makes for truly meaningful endgame progression, establishing exciting goals to achieve for their characters beyond level 80. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will launch with 39 unique Masteries to earn and seven tracks for players to progress, and the system is designed for new masteries to be introduced in future content updates.
Variety of Skills and Abilities for Players to Learn
There are Mastery tiers being introduced in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns that players must uncover in the Heart of Maguuma Jungle, the new zone in the expansion. These allow players to acquire unique new skills as they learn secrets from the Exalted, Itzel, and Nuhoch, new races that they will discover in the jungle. Players will need to unlock and train Masteries such as gliding, mushroom jumping and new combat techniques introduced to them by these races to explore the Heart of Maguuma and overcome the vicious new foes they will encounter.
Masteries for the Legendary Journey in Central Tyria
In addition to Heart of Maguuma Masteries, Heart of Thorns will introduce a number of new Mastery tracks to unlock in Central Tyria, the main zones in Guild Wars 2. Players can pursue tracks for Pact Commander Mastery and earn abilities that bring exciting new elements to what they experience in Central Tyria. They can progress a Mastery line that introduces new skills and rewards to Fractal Dungeons. There is also the Legendary Journey track, a long-awaited feature that will send players on an epic journey to collect the core requirements for acquiring the ultimate prestige item in Guild Wars 2 – a legendary weapon.
Endgame Progression that Rewards Players and Doesn’t Invalidate Progress
Progression in the Mastery system requires both time and expertise. Players will train a given Mastery track by killing enemies, completing events, exploring zones, and anything else that would normally earn XP. When a Mastery is fully trained, players can then use their Mastery points to unlock the ability associated with that tier.
